  3. INSTALLING PAF2.31 ON A TWO 720K FLOPPY DRIVE SYSTEM
  4.  
  5. PAF2.31 cannot be installed on a computer with only floppy drives
  6. with the standard INSTALL program that comes on the distribution
  7. disk.  For that standard installation a HARD DRIVE is required to
  8. provide sufficient disk space to UNZIP the compressed files on the
  9. distribution disk prior to configuration.
  10.  
  11. These files are normally placed in the PAF program directory and
  12. require about 1.3 megs of disk space.  All these files are not
  13. required for the operation of the Family Records program but most
  14. are required for the initial CONFIGuration of PAF and in most cases
  15. must be located in the PAF program directory.
  16.  
  17. Consideration is given here for the installation of those required
  18. files to successfully operate FR.EXE, FRCHK.EXE, GIE.EXE, and
  19. RDF.EXE.  There are no provisions for running the program PAF.EXE
  20. which is the PAF Access Menu program and is unnecessary.  Also some
  21. of the features normally accessed from FR.EXE will not be available
  22. from that source but can be run from the DOS Command Line prompt.
  23.  
  24. GEDCOM (GIE.EXE) and the Research Data Filer (RDF.EXE) are copied to
  25. separate disks and must be run from them and called from the command
  26. line.  In the original configuration below, FRCHK.EXE will be on a
  27. separate disk (DISK#4) and must be called from the command line also.
  28. FRCHK.EXE could be copied to DISK#1 and then run from FR.EXE if you
  29. give up the PAFHELP file.  To me that option is not advisable.
  30.  
  31. The Command Interpreter (COMMAND.COM) must be on each disk used in
  32. the Program Directory/Drive.  It is not required on the data disk.
  33.  
  34. Blank forms are located on a separate disk and can be printed from
  35. the DOS prompt with the COPY command after setting the printer for
  36. the proper line length used by the forms.  Primary interest here
  37. would be for the Pedigree Charts and the Family Group Records which
  38. require COMPRESSED PRINT.  Most but not all others utilize an 80
  39. character line and do not require printer reconfiguration.
  40.  
  41. PAF2.31 for 3 1/2" drives comes on one 720K disk and is in compressed
  42. format.   The files included are:
  43.  
  44.      INSTALL.EXE
  45.      PAFINST1.ZIP
  46.      PAFINST2.ZIP
  47.      PKUNZIP.EXE
  48.  
  49. The file PAFINST1.ZIP extracts to 1,276,001 bytes which is too large
  50. to extract to your floppy drives and therefore will require
  51. individual file extraction.
  52.  
  53. The file PAFINST2.ZIP is small, only 10,065 bytes, and can be
  54. extracted with no problem.
  55.  
  56. To extract these files to the proper disks for operation of FR.EXE,
  57. GIE.EXE, RDF.EXE, and CONFIG.EXE follow the outline below.
  58.  
  59. 1.>  Format 4 disks.  Label them:
  60.      #1. Family Records (FR.EXE)
  61.      #2. GEDCOM (GIE.EXE)
  62.      #3. Research Data Filer (RDF.EXE)
  63.      #4. Configuration (CONFIG.EXE)
  64.  
  65. Format DISK #4 as a system disk.  This disk will also hold FRCHK.EXE,
  66. PRINTER.ZIP, and all the Blank Form formats (*.FRM).  This disk can
  67. be used for booting the computer and you may add your CONFIG.SYS and
  68. AUTOEXEC.BAT files to it as desired.
  69.  
  70. 2.> Place the Distribution Disk ( or a backup of it) in Drive A:
  71.     Place DISK#4 if DRIVE B:
  72.     In all following instructions 'at the prompt' means at A:\>
  73.     You must press <ENTER> or <RETURN> after each command entry.

  75.     At the prompt type:     COPY PKUNZIP.EXE B:
  76.     At the prompt type:     PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP CONFIG.EXE B:
  77.     At the prompt type:     PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.ZIP B:
  78.     At the prompt type:     PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP FRCHK.EXE B:

  80.     If you are proficient at using PKUNZIP then you can combine the
  81.     last three commands to a single command line.

  164. The actual sequence of the files in the directory may not be the
  165. same as above.   Size and date of COMMAND.COM may vary.  Some files
  166. will be added during configuration.  New files will be PAFCONF.DAT,
  167. PAFHELP.NDX, and RDFHELP.NDX.  You can gain a little room by
  168. deleting PAFGIE.MSG from the RDF DISK#3 and from the FR DISK#1.
  169.  
  170. If you do not have one of the following printers, then you can skip
  171. down to the CONFIGURATION steps.
  172.  
  173.    CANON Laser Beam
  174.    HP DESKJET
  175.    HP DESKJET 500 Series
  176.    HP LASERJET II Series
  177.    HP LASERJET III Series
  178.    HP LASERJET III & IV Series A4 paper

  183. If your printer falls into one of the above categories, then
  184. with DISK#4 in DRIVE A: and DISK#1 in DRIVE B:
  185.  
  186.  For CANON printers:
  187.  At the prompt type:   PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP CAN?.PRN B:
  188.  
  189.  For HP DeskJet Printers:
  190.  At the prompt type:    PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP DJ*.PRN B:

  192.  For HP LaserJet printers:

  195.  For IMB  printers:

  204. If your printer does not properly operate with the extracted files
  205. then you can extract ALL those drivers to drive B: with the
  206. following command.

  208.    PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP B:

  210. Driver data for other printers is already contained in the
  211. PRNT23.CFG file on DISK#1.  If your printer is not listed then you
  212. can ADD your printer to the list by supplying the proper codes to
  213. the Configuration file.

  217. CONFIGURING PAF2.31
  218.  
  219. Place DISK#4 in DRIVE A:
  220. Place DISK#1 in DRIVE B:
  221.  
  222. At the prompt type   B:
  223. From here on the prompt should be B:\> rather than A:\>
  224.  
  225. At the prompt type A:CONFIG
  226.  
  227. Follow the prompts given by the Configuration program.  At the end
  228. of CONFIG.EXE you will be asked to insert DISK#1, DISK#2, and DISK#3
  229. in turn in DRIVE B: to insure that each has the PAFCONF.DAT file for
  230. its operation.
  231.  
  232. FAMILY RECORDS
  233.  
  234. To operate FR.EXE you will have to create your database.  Format one
  235. or more disks for your data.  Label disk the unique name you
  236. have selected as the name for that database.  Place your program
  237. disk (DISK#1) in the drive you entered for it in the configuration.
  238. Place a Data disk in the drive you entered for data in the
  239. configuration.
  240.  
  241. Log onto your program disk drive.  I would recommend that you
  242. configure Drive A: as your program drive and Drive B: as your data
  243. drive.  There is not enough room on DISK#1 to make it a system disk
  244. without eliminating one or more of the files you may wish to keep.
  245.  
  246. At the DOS prompt type FR and press ENTER.  This will start the
  247. Family Records program for you.
  248.  
  249. Options and Functions lost with a two floppy PAF Configuration.
  250.  
  251.  1.  You cannot use the PAF Access Menu.  You must access your data
  252.      by typing FR on the command line.
  253.  
  254.  2.  You cannot run FRCHK from the PAF Access Menu, the option at
  255.      termination screen when exiting PAf, or from the Utility Menu.
  256.      FRCHK must be accessed by typing FRCHK and the Drive from the
  257.      DOS prompt.  Example for data in drive B: then place the disk
  258.      containing FRCHK.EXE (DISK#4) in drive A: and type:
  259.  
  260.            FRCHK B:   and press <ENTER>
  261.  
  262.  3.  You cannot run GIE.EXE from the PAF Access Menu.  Place the
  263.      disk containing GIE.EXE in Drive A: and type GIE at the prompt.
  264.  
  265.  4.  You cannot use external notes.  To use external notes, both the
  266.      disk containing the external word processor and the notes need
  267.      to be on line.  This would require additional disk drives.
  268.  
  269.  5.  You cannot run many of the shareware utilities that require
  270.      additional working directory space or that require a hard
  271.      drive.
  272.  
  273.  6.  You are limited to the amount of data you can have in a single
  274.      database.  Your data cannot span disks so the disk size
  275.      determines your limit.  With an average of one noteline for
  276.      each individual, you will probably be limited to less than 1,500
  277.      individuals per database.
  278.  
  279.  7.  Size of a GEDCOM file created or being entered will be limited
  280.      to the amount of free space on the GIE.EXE (DISK#2).  Gedcom
  281.      files must be input/output from/to that disk.
  282.  
  283.  
  284.  Other limitations may show up as you are using the program but you
  285.  may discover methods to work around them.  This is only an
  286.  opportunity to utilize PAF2.31 on these older computers until other
  287.  equipment becomes available to you.  Operation of PAF2.31 under
  288.  these conditions is still a better option than most other genealogy
  289.  database programs configured for such a machine..
  290.  
  291.  Operation of PAF2.31 on a two 360K floppy drive system is also
  292.  possible but is so severely restricted that it is impracticle to
  293.  even discuss.
  294.  
  295.  If there are specific questions or problems encountered I will give

  297.  giving as much detail as possible.  I cannot guarantee that there
  298.  are no errors in the above procedures.
