INSTALLING PAF2.31 ON A TWO 720K FLOPPY DRIVE SYSTEM
PAF2.31 cannot be installed on a computer with only floppy drives
with the standard INSTALL program that comes on the distribution
disk. For that standard installation a HARD DRIVE is required to
provide sufficient disk space to UNZIP the compressed files on the
distribution disk prior to configuration.
These files are normally placed in the PAF program directory and
require about 1.3 megs of disk space. All these files are not
required for the operation of the Family Records program but most
are required for the initial CONFIGuration of PAF and in most cases
must be located in the PAF program directory.
Consideration is given here for the installation of those required
files to successfully operate FR.EXE, FRCHK.EXE, GIE.EXE, and
RDF.EXE. There are no provisions for running the program PAF.EXE
which is the PAF Access Menu program and is unnecessary. Also some
of the features normally accessed from FR.EXE will not be available
from that source but can be run from the DOS Command Line prompt.
GEDCOM (GIE.EXE) and the Research Data Filer (RDF.EXE) are copied to
separate disks and must be run from them and called from the command
line. In the original configuration below, FRCHK.EXE will be on a
separate disk (DISK#4) and must be called from the command line also.
FRCHK.EXE could be copied to DISK#1 and then run from FR.EXE if you
give up the PAFHELP file. To me that option is not advisable.
The Command Interpreter (COMMAND.COM) must be on each disk used in
the Program Directory/Drive. It is not required on the data disk.
Blank forms are located on a separate disk and can be printed from
the DOS prompt with the COPY command after setting the printer for
the proper line length used by the forms. Primary interest here
would be for the Pedigree Charts and the Family Group Records which
require COMPRESSED PRINT. Most but not all others utilize an 80
character line and do not require printer reconfiguration.
PAF2.31 for 3 1/2" drives comes on one 720K disk and is in compressed
format. The files included are:
INSTALL.EXE
PAFINST1.ZIP
PAFINST2.ZIP
PKUNZIP.EXE
The file PAFINST1.ZIP extracts to 1,276,001 bytes which is too large
to extract to your floppy drives and therefore will require
individual file extraction.
The file PAFINST2.ZIP is small, only 10,065 bytes, and can be
extracted with no problem.
To extract these files to the proper disks for operation of FR.EXE,
GIE.EXE, RDF.EXE, and CONFIG.EXE follow the outline below.
1.> Format 4 disks. Label them:
#1. Family Records (FR.EXE)
#2. GEDCOM (GIE.EXE)
#3. Research Data Filer (RDF.EXE)
#4. Configuration (CONFIG.EXE)
Format DISK #4 as a system disk. This disk will also hold FRCHK.EXE,
PRINTER.ZIP, and all the Blank Form formats (*.FRM). This disk can
be used for booting the computer and you may add your CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files to it as desired.
2.> Place the Distribution Disk ( or a backup of it) in Drive A:
Place DISK#4 if DRIVE B:
In all following instructions 'at the prompt' means at A:\>
You must press <ENTER> or <RETURN> after each command entry.
At the prompt type: COPY PKUNZIP.EXE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP CONFIG.EXE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.ZIP B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP FRCHK.EXE B:
If you are proficient at using PKUNZIP then you can combine the
last three commands to a single command line.
3.> Place DISK#2 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP GIE.EXE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP *.MSG B:
4.> Place DISK#3 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP RDF*.* B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.MSG B:
5.> Place DISK#1 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP FR.EXE B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP PAFHELP B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.MSG B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.DAT B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST1.ZIP *.STD B:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PAFINST2.ZIP *.* B:
At the prompt type: RENAME B:PRNT231.CFG PRINT23.CFG
6.> Place DISK#4 in DRIVE A:
At the prompt type: COPY COMMAND.COM B:
7.> Place DISK#2 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type: COPY COMMAND.COM B:
8.> Place DISK#3 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type: COPY COMMAND.COM B:
This point you should have extracted to disks the required files as
follows:
DISK #1

The actual sequence of the files in the directory may not be the
same as above. Size and date of COMMAND.COM may vary. Some files
will be added during configuration. New files will be PAFCONF.DAT,
PAFHELP.NDX, and RDFHELP.NDX. You can gain a little room by
deleting PAFGIE.MSG from the RDF DISK#3 and from the FR DISK#1.
If you do not have one of the following printers, then you can skip
down to the CONFIGURATION steps.
CANON Laser Beam
HP DESKJET
HP DESKJET 500 Series
HP LASERJET II Series
HP LASERJET III Series
HP LASERJET III & IV Series A4 paper
IBM LASER PRINTER
PANASONIC LASER
POST SCRIPT
If your printer falls into one of the above categories, then
with DISK#4 in DRIVE A: and DISK#1 in DRIVE B:
For CANON printers:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP CAN?.PRN B:
For HP DeskJet Printers:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP DJ*.PRN B:
For HP LaserJet printers:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP HP*.PRN B:
For IMB printers:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP IBM*.PRN B:
For PANASONIC printer:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP PAN?.PRN B:
For POSTSCRIPT printers:
At the prompt type: PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP PS?.PRN B:
If your printer does not properly operate with the extracted files
then you can extract ALL those drivers to drive B: with the
following command.
PKUNZIP PRINTER.ZIP B:
Driver data for other printers is already contained in the
PRNT23.CFG file on DISK#1. If your printer is not listed then you
can ADD your printer to the list by supplying the proper codes to
the Configuration file.
CONFIGURING PAF2.31
Place DISK#4 in DRIVE A:
Place DISK#1 in DRIVE B:
At the prompt type B:
From here on the prompt should be B:\> rather than A:\>
At the prompt type A:CONFIG
Follow the prompts given by the Configuration program. At the end
of CONFIG.EXE you will be asked to insert DISK#1, DISK#2, and DISK#3
in turn in DRIVE B: to insure that each has the PAFCONF.DAT file for
its operation.
FAMILY RECORDS
To operate FR.EXE you will have to create your database. Format one
or more disks for your data. Label disk the unique name you
have selected as the name for that database. Place your program
disk (DISK#1) in the drive you entered for it in the configuration.
Place a Data disk in the drive you entered for data in the
configuration.
Log onto your program disk drive. I would recommend that you
configure Drive A: as your program drive and Drive B: as your data
drive. There is not enough room on DISK#1 to make it a system disk
without eliminating one or more of the files you may wish to keep.
At the DOS prompt type FR and press ENTER. This will start the
Family Records program for you.
Options and Functions lost with a two floppy PAF Configuration.
1. You cannot use the PAF Access Menu. You must access your data
by typing FR on the command line.
2. You cannot run FRCHK from the PAF Access Menu, the option at
termination screen when exiting PAf, or from the Utility Menu.
FRCHK must be accessed by typing FRCHK and the Drive from the
DOS prompt. Example for data in drive B: then place the disk
containing FRCHK.EXE (DISK#4) in drive A: and type:
FRCHK B: and press <ENTER>
3. You cannot run GIE.EXE from the PAF Access Menu. Place the
disk containing GIE.EXE in Drive A: and type GIE at the prompt.
4. You cannot use external notes. To use external notes, both the
disk containing the external word processor and the notes need
to be on line. This would require additional disk drives.
5. You cannot run many of the shareware utilities that require
additional working directory space or that require a hard
drive.
6. You are limited to the amount of data you can have in a single
database. Your data cannot span disks so the disk size
determines your limit. With an average of one noteline for
each individual, you will probably be limited to less than 1,500
individuals per database.
7. Size of a GEDCOM file created or being entered will be limited
to the amount of free space on the GIE.EXE (DISK#2). Gedcom
files must be input/output from/to that disk.
Other limitations may show up as you are using the program but you
may discover methods to work around them. This is only an
opportunity to utilize PAF2.31 on these older computers until other
equipment becomes available to you. Operation of PAF2.31 under
these conditions is still a better option than most other genealogy
database programs configured for such a machine..
Operation of PAF2.31 on a two 360K floppy drive system is also
possible but is so severely restricted that it is impracticle to
even discuss.
If there are specific questions or problems encountered I will give
all assistance I can. Write, call, or leave message on GEnie
giving as much detail as possible. I cannot guarantee that there
are no errors in the above procedures.
